October 2006:  Mark I. Greenberg, Director of Special Collections at USF Libraries, Tampa,  briefed us on the various collections at USF.  He introduced Lesley T. Stone, Curator of Medieval Manuscripts at USF, who discussed and displayed several cart fulls of Medieval Manuscripts, which FBS members were permitted to closely examine and admire.

 

April 2006:  Marlyn Pethe, University of Tampa Library Director, presented a talk on the history of the library and its Special Collections, exhibiting a library cart full of treasures from the UT Library.  She followed it up with a  walk thru of the Special Collections' library stacks by the FBS members. 

 

March 2006:  Art Walker presented a talk on Boys and Girls Adventure Stories having a Florida plot.  He also provided a history of the Edward Stratemeyer Syndicate, identifying many of the writers Mr. Stretemeyer hired to write the books.  Art had two tables full of his collection of juvenile books for the viewing pleasure of our members.  See the Photo Gallery for a photo of Art.

 

February 2006:  Jerry Morris presented  a talk on Mary Hyde, noted book collector and author, and brought a table full of books either written or formerly owned by Mary Hyde.  There is a link to his talk on the Biblio Talks page.

January 2006:  Fred Farrar presented a talk on incidents which occurred during the Revolutionary War that changed the course of our history,citing the original newspaper stories,  copies of which he provided for the viewing pleasure of his captivated audience.

November 2005:  Show and Tell.  Members brought in books to show, revealed the locations of where they found hidden treasures, briefed us on upcoming events in the local area, and instructed us on book collecting terms and what they should mean.

October 2005:  Jerry Morris presented a talk on William Targ, bibliophile, bookseller, editor, and publisher.  There is a link to his talk on the Biblio Talks page.

September 2005:  Lee Harrer presented a talk on the early history of the Florida Bibliophile Society.  As a founding member, Lee gave us an inside look at the early years of the society, illustrating his presentation with printed matter and archival material.

April 2005:  Nicholas Basbanes presented a talk on his encounters while gathering material for his many books about books collecting, articularly his dealings with Stephen Carrie Blumberg, the notorious book thief.

March 2005:  Paul T. Ruxin presented a talk on Samuel Johnson, bringing us back two-hundred and fifty years, and providing a glimpse of a softer side of Samuel Johnson.  There is a link to his talk on the Biblio Talks page, as well as links to talks he presented before the Aldus Society.

February 2005:  Fred Farrar presented a talk on newspaper reports involving presidential elections and bizarre happenings which occurred during the elections.  Fred brought original newspapers, cartoons, and ephemera for the members to view.

 

January 2005:  Jerry Kovar presented a talk on his collection of 1000 old movie theater posters and lobby stills, bringing many posters from the 1930s and 1940s for the members to view.

 November 2004:  Show and Tell.  Members talked about their favorite topics from authors to private presses.

October 2004:  Dr. Richard Mathews presented a talk on the history of the Konglomerati Press, nd provided an overview of letterpress printing. 

September 2004:  Roberta Ballentine presented a talk on the Christopher Marlowe controversy and the authorship of the Shakespeare plays.

1983-2003  Speakers:  The Florida Bibliophile Society celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2007.   One possible topic of interest for an anniversary committee is to publish a keepsake highlighting the speakers and special events of the society's first twenty-five years.  Volunteers are needed for this committe now.  Times a-wasting!
